The Stream Deck OpenAI Should Have Built
OpenAI's first hardware is, underneath the hype, an Elgato Stream Deck that only talks to ChatGPT. So I built AgInOl: a software deck that hovers over all your windows and shows the live status of every coding agent you run, on the Mac and mirrored to your phone.
OpenAI's first piece of hardware got a Jony Ive design, a launch event, and a lot of noise. Strip the marketing away and it is an Elgato Stream Deck that only knows how to talk to ChatGPT.
Manuel Burgschachner made that point first, mapping the new device onto a Stream Deck to show how little was actually new. I read his post, agreed, and then did the thing you are not supposed to do with someone else's good observation: I took it (and, honestly, a bit of his layout) and built the version I wanted.
It's called AgInOl, Agent Info Overlay. A Stream-Deck-style deck, in software, that hovers above all your windows and shows the live status of every coding agent you run - Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Kimi Code - instead of one chatbot. Which one is working, which one finished ten minutes ago and is quietly waiting for you, and how much of each usage window you have left. The Mac app never steals focus, so it stays on top of everything else and sits next to your terminal at the same time, and it remains fully offline unless you switch on live usage lookups yourself.
I built the Mac app first. Then I wanted to know from the sofa whether an agent was stuck, so there is now an iPhone and iPad companion that mirrors the deck over iCloud and always tells you how old the data is.
